Every great food journey begins with a hunger for more than just a meal. It’s about discovering the soul of a place through its flavors, stories, and people. My latest adventure took me to the charming mountain town of Mena, Arkansas, a hidden gem nestled in the Ouachita Mountains. What started as a quest for something delicious turned into an unforgettable exploration of history, folklore, and incredible barbecue.

Mena: From Rails to Trails

Mena’s story began in the late 19th century, founded in 1896 as a railroad town. Named after Folmina "Mena" Janssen de Goeijen, the wife of a Dutch financier of the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad, the town quickly became a hub for commerce and travelers. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Ouachita National Forest, Mena evolved into a destination for adventurers seeking scenic trails, camping, and outdoor fun. Over the decades, it has retained its small-town charm while embracing visitors with open arms.

Today, Mena’s rich history is evident in its vibrant downtown, dotted with antique shops, cozy cafes, and a welcoming atmosphere. But the real treasure lies in the stories you’ll hear and the food you’ll taste.

A Bigfoot Sighting and a BBQ Dream

As I strolled through Mena’s streets, I struck up a conversation with a local, a man with a twinkle in his eye and a tale to tell. He recounted a legendary Bigfoot sighting in the nearby woods, a story passed down over the years with all the embellishments you’d expect. But his true passion wasn’t cryptids—it was barbecue. He told me about Monty Hale and his wife, who had turned their love for smoked meats into a culinary institution: Bigfoot’s Backwoods Barbecue.

The Hales’ food truck, parked conveniently near the hospital at 1250 Crestwood Circle, has become a beacon for barbecue lovers in Mena. Inspired by the area’s folklore and their shared passion for great food, Monty and his wife created a menu that combines traditional barbecue techniques with their own inventive twists.

Bigfoot Bait: A Local Legend

Among the mouthwatering offerings at Bigfoot’s Backwoods Barbecue, one dish stands tall: the Pork Belly Burnt Ends, affectionately known as Bigfoot Bait. These tender, smoky morsels are caramelized to perfection, offering a perfect balance of savory and sweet flavors. The dish has become a favorite not only for locals but for travelers like me, who are lucky enough to stumble upon this culinary masterpiece.

Monty’s dedication to his craft is evident in every bite. “Barbecue is more than food,” he told me. “It’s about bringing people together, sharing stories, and creating memories.” Judging by the crowd gathered around his food truck, he’s doing just that.
