Van Buren, Arkansas, is a town steeped in rich history, tracing its roots back to the early 1800s. Originally a frontier outpost, it later grew into a vibrant town driven by commerce, saloons, and the railways. Nestled on the banks of the Arkansas River, Van Buren’s streets are lined with century-old buildings that have witnessed countless historical moments. The town has attracted visitors for years, offering a glimpse into its past as a bustling Wild West tourist hub. Its charm even caught the eye of Hollywood in the filming of the western movie Broken Trail. To recreate the feel of an old Western town, Main Street was transformed into a scene reminiscent of the OK Corral, complete with gravel roads and saloon-style facades.
You had to be there. It was epic.

But Van Buren isn't just about history. It’s a place where tradition meets modernity, and nowhere is this more apparent than in Brandon Rapier's latest venture, The Breakfast Club. Inspired by his grandfather’s relentless hard work and love for cooking despite battling poverty, Brandon opened this cozy spot to share that dedication with the community. A former art museum owner, Brandon has infused his new restaurant with an eclectic art gallery feel. Step inside, and you’re greeted by fascinating art pieces, nostalgic antiques, and quirky décor, from Space Invader-themed art to an old 1980s floor-model color television that takes you back in time. The atmosphere alone will have you lost in memories before you even take a bite.
The menu at The Breakfast Club is equally impressive, blending classic breakfast items with a modern twist. During my visit, I kept it simple but satisfying with bacon and eggs paired with a hot coffee— a classic meal done right. But for those wanting to explore the menu further, Brandon offers three standout breakfast dishes that locals rave about. If you're in town, make sure to stop by and enjoy this little artistic culinary haven.

Next, I headed over to Pointer Brewer, a Van Buren gem currently being run by the proud parents of the establishment’s founder, who is currently serving in the military. Sally and Jeff Willard were my gracious hosts, offering a full tour of the brewery and sharing the story behind their son’s passion for brewing. Pointer Brewer, named after the Van Buren High School mascot, the Pointer, has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. With a unique menu that blends American and Korean flavors, the brewery stands out for its creative approach to food and drinks. Sally and Jeff highly recommended I try their bigoli, a traditional Korean dish they’ve perfected with their own twist. Pointer Brewer’s relaxed vibe and diverse menu make it a must-visit for anyone passing through Van Buren.
Of course, Van Buren’s dining scene doesn’t stop there.
For a more lively atmosphere, I also recommend checking out The Vault Sports Lounge, which offers a great selection of food, drinks, and entertainment. If you’re into music and vinyl, don’t miss Iron Horse Records, a vintage record store with a cool vibe that fits right into Van Buren’s old-meets-new character.
Van Buren is a town that embraces its history while welcoming fresh ideas and ventures. From breakfast at The Breakfast Club to drinks at Pointer Brewer, this town has a little something for everyone. So whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or someone who just enjoys exploring a town with character, Van Buren won’t disappoint.
