Let's Eat: Journey Through Camden, Arkansas - A Historical and Culinary Adventure

Writer's picture: Kevin RobinsonKevin Robinson

Camden, Arkansas, a town with a rich history and vibrant culture, was once known by several names, including "Ecore a Fabri" and "Fremont." Located along the Ouachita River, Camden was officially established in 1844, evolving from a trading post into a thriving city. Its strategic location played a crucial role in the Civil War, particularly during the Camden Expedition of 1864, a significant campaign in the Red River Campaign, where Union and Confederate forces clashed in a series of battles that shaped the course of the war.

As we combed through the streets of Camden, our first stop was the historic Chidester House Museum, a testament to the city's deep-rooted past. This beautifully preserved home of Colonel John T. Chidester, a prominent figure during the Civil War, offers a glimpse into the era's history and the vital role Camden played. The museum is a treasure trove of artifacts and stories, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. I was also told it was a little bit haunted by chidesters ghost.

Camden's historical significance doesn't stop there. The town gained fame as one of the filming locations for the acclaimed TV mini-series "North and South," which brought the town's antebellum charm to life on screen. Walking through the streets of Camden feels like stepping back in time, where history and modern life seamlessly intertwine.

Camden offers more than just historical experiences; it's also a haven for food enthusiasts. The White House stands out as an iconic eatery, a legendary restaurant that has delighted patrons for many generations. Operated by the Vaughan family, this delightful venue is a staple of Camden's gastronomic landscape. I recently enjoyed a memorable meal there alongside former SAU Chancellor and regular patron Dr. Corbet Lamkin, as well as Thomas Vaughan, the owner's son. The ambiance is as inviting as the cuisine is delectable, featuring a menu that showcases the finest Southern culinary traditions.

The culinary delights don't stop at The White House. Camden is home to several other fantastic eateries, each with its unique flair. What's Cooking is a local favorite, known for its homestyle comfort food that feels like a warm hug on a plate. From hearty breakfasts to satisfying dinners, this spot never disappoints.

Another gem is TJ's Place, where the down-home cooking is served with a side of Southern hospitality. Whether you're craving fried catfish, juicy burgers, or some classic soul food, TJ's has something to satisfy every palate.

For those looking for a more casual dining experience, Woods Place is a must-visit. This no-frills restaurant is all about good food and great company. Their menu is packed with

Southern staples that will leave you craving more.

Indeed, Camden offers much more than just these few establishments, with a wealth of local spots yet to be explored. The town's culinary offerings are as diverse as its historical tapestry, presenting a compelling destination for both food enthusiasts and history aficionados.

Our journey through Camden, Arkansas, has been an unforgettable experience, filled with fascinating stories from the past and incredible flavors from the present. Whether you're visiting for the history, the food, or both, Camden is a town that promises to leave a lasting impression.
